When Kevin Williams gave us a call, he was ready to get this project done and wanted to scratch the itch to go fast. This Foxbody racecar had been a work in progress for quite some time and there was quite a bit completed on it when we received it. We sat down with Kevin and were able to get a plan of attack ironed out and the progress was underway.
How it started
The Process
Wiring
Kevin had already completed a good bit of the wiring on the vehicle when it came to us. We needed to get that finished up. We installed bulkhead connectors for the Holley Terminator X harness and chassis power and grounds to the engine compartment. Not only does it add to the finished look of the engine bay, but it provides resiliency against chaffing and aids in ease of removal if the engine should ever need to come out of the vehicle.
Plumbing
A majority of the plumbing on the vehicle still needed to be completed. We mapped out the routes to run our Fuel lines, oil lines, steering lines, brake lines, clutch lines and fire system and went to work.
Fabrication And Body Work
A majority of the fabrication work had already been completed, but in order to run the Kenny Brown IRS in the rear end and the Griggs Racing SLA in the front, we needed to clearance the fenders and quarter panels to add the widebody flares from Chicane23. This car got a dual pass radiator, auxiliary power steering cooler and auxiliary oil cooler that required some radiator support modification for adequate clearance. To add in some weight savings, we manufactured aluminum front and rear bumper reinforcements that fit with the factory body work and bumpers, which will also have our tow hook provisions. The factory front bumper is upgraded with a Cervini Saleen lower air dam to aid in the addition of brake cooling ducts. Lexan quarter windows will provide some weight savings along with the ability to add the NACA ducts for cooling.
Paint work
Paint work was completed by Dewayne Stiles. The custom matte finish paint color was picked by Kevin and pay homage to his time as a fighter pilot in the US Military.
Exhaust
To let this car breathe, we built a boom tube style exhaust that exits the car on the passenger side before the rear tire. The BBK headers are collected into a custom X that should flow equally out the side.
Drivetrain
Bolted to the 331ci motor (still to come) is a Tremec TKX transmission, which is mounted with a Stifflers crossmember and turning a custom length aluminum driveshaft. To put the power to the ground, the Kenny Brown IRS setup got a brand new 8.8 built in-house with Ford Performance 3.73 gears and a Wavetrac differential.
Powerplant
The motor of choice for this build is a Small block Ford based 331 spec'd, machined and assembled by Elan Power Products. This motor is complete with all forged internals packed into a 6-bolt main Boss Block and trimmed out with a custom grind cam, AFR heads equipped with shaft mount rocker arms, Trick Flow intake, and ARP hardware throughout. It also has a top of the line Innovators West damper. The oil pan is a Canton Products road-race pan and any oil starvation issues are being remedied with an Accusump purge tank. The power is transferred through a Tilton twin-disc clutch assembly to the Tremec TKX Transmission. Cooling this motor is a Griffin Dual-Pass radiator paired with a Fluidyne Therm-HX oil cooler. A set of Flex-a-Lite dual electric fans assist, when needed. The entire car is plumbed with Finish Line Factory AN line and fittings.
